David Walliams’ next children’s book, due to be published by HarperCollins Children’s Books in September, will be titled Grandpa’s Great Escape.

In the book, which will once again be illustrated by Tony Ross, Grandpa becomes muddled in old age and believes he is still a fighter pilot in World War Two. When he is sent to an old people’s home he is convinced it is a prisoner of war camp and plans an escape with his grandson Jack.

Publisher Ann-Janine Murtagh said she was “blown away” by the story. “I’ve published David Walliams for seven years and each time he delivers a new book he enthrals and enchants me,” she said. “This is tender-hearted storytelling with the boldest and most audacious of his adventures yet.”

Grandpa’s Great Escape
is Walliams’ eighth children’s fiction title. His last book, Awful Auntie, was last year the first book in a decade to retain pole position at the top of the official UK Top 50 for a record-breaking sixth week in a row.

He is also the author of three picture books, again illustrated by Ross.
